Team SoloMid vs Cloud9

TSM FTX taking on Cloud9 on the third day of the 2022 LCS Lock-In was supposed to be yet another “el clasico.” Unfortunately, fate had other plans. COVID-19 has reared its ugly head yet again and has prevented both of these age-old titans from fielding their intended starting line-ups.

Not exactly the kind of start either of these two orgs were looking for, but it is what it is. TSM FTX have decided to start with their entire Academy line-up, whereas Cloud9 went the opposite route: they’ll mix and match players and have decided on the following five: Darshan “Darshan” Upadhaya (of CLG fame), Robert “Blaber” Huang, Ibrahim “Fudge” Allami, Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen, and Jonah “Isles” Rosario.

This is still an LCS-caliber roster. There’s no other way to put it. Three fifths of it, in fact, had just played on the World Championship stage mere weeks ago, so they’ll have plenty of pre-built synergy — to the glee of many C9 fans spread across the globe. This might not be the kind of start that Cloud9 had wanted but by no means should anyone be disappointed with the way things shaked out.

In fact, one could even go a step further and argue that Cloud9 will now have a much bigger shot at leaving a mark than they would’ve had with their intended starting line-up — the one with three LCK imports, only one of which is a known quantity.

Funny how things work out sometimes. Those who were hoping to see Park “Summit” Woo-tae, Kim “Berserker” Min-cheol, and Kim “Winsome” Dong-keo compete on the LCS stage will therefore have to wait a little bit longer. In the meantime, Cloud9 will be fielding a much more seasoned line-up — one that isn’t burdened by a language barrier.

We don’t expect them to truly challenge the likes of 100 Thieves, Team Liquid, and Evil Geniuses, but they could very well beat the brakes off of everyone else.

A Wholly Different Approach

TSM’s decision to field their entire Academy line-up deserves praise and commendation. There’s nothing on the line here, so they might as well give their “B team” a bit of stage time — it’s an invaluable learning experience and it should, by all means, catalyze growth.

They won’t accomplish much in the grand scheme of things, but this age-old organization will gladly “take the L” as it’s for the greater good. In the meantime, their LCS players will observe from the sidelines, take notes, and scrim whenever possible. Not the worst set-up one can imagine, all things considered!

In the end, we simply have to side with Cloud9 as that’s the only logical option.
