Fnatic vs G2 Esports

What a peculiar match-up. These two former "kings" are seemingly destined to trade blows until the end of time. And so here we are, at the verge of yet another Best of 5 spectacle, a clash of some of the very best and most capable players Europe has to offer. This is pretty much as good as it gets so if you're a fan of mouth-watering narratives and multi-year-long storylines, make sure to tune in — a good time is all but guaranteed!

Prediction-wise, this one's a nightmare. It really is, and for quite obvious reasons, too. We already saw this one play out a mere two weeks ago. Fnatic were the better team and their 3-1 win left no doubt whatsoever. They weren't perfect and they sure as heck could have been a bit cleaner in their execution, but they got the job done and looked pretty darn good in the process, too. They countered whatever G2 wanted to do and had all the right tools to best their perennial adversaries.

But it'd be foolish of us to label this one as a foregone conclusion. G2 then went on to outclass both Team Vitality and Misfits Gaming — it took them just six games to dispose of their opposition and set up a rematch with the boys in black and orange. We're talking about two exceedingly dominant clean sweeps. And through those wins, G2 made one thing perfectly clear: they're a Top 3 contender and team worthy of our utmost respect. They, too, often struggle (only natural given their lacking synergy), but whenever they get on the same page and execute it sure is a thing of beauty.

Are they good enough to beat Fnatic, though? That's what we're all wondering. Have they grown *enough* throughout the last two weeks for it to matter, for them to stand a chance against a team as stacked, seasoned, and capable as Fnatic? Have they solved their biggest issues, those which Fnatic so easily exploited mere days ago? That's the million dollar question and, frankly, it's nigh impossible to answer. G2 are not as layered as Fnatic. They don't have as many win conditions nor are they as versatile. That, however, doesn't necessarily mean they'll end up losing.

They were quite competitive the first time around, even though you wouldn't be able to tell based on the final score. They kept up with Fnatic and had many great plays of their own, but once the mid and later stages of the game came around they couldn't quite match what Fnatic was doing on the Rift. They were slower to react and their teamfighting was nowhere near as potent. But a lot can change in two weeks' time. Their mistakes were obvious and are, therefore, relatively easy to fix and shore up. And, based on their performances against Vitality and Misfits, they've seemingly done their homework (and then some).

Still, Fnatic are a different kind of beast. They're sometimes reckless, granted, but boy are they good at League of Legends. They're all as seasoned as it gets and will only get better and better as time goes on. Their win over G2 was neither a fluke nor a coincidence — they were head and shoulders better when it mattered most, in those highly chaotic situations when split-second decision-making makes the biggest difference. They know what they're in for and how to best prepare, and they've also had the luxury of observing G2 from the sidelines, evaluating their play and finding (even more) potential weaknesses and flaws which they can exploit.

It's hard to bet *against* them, is all, after all that they've done, although their dreadful showing against Rogue certainly *did* hurt their stock — it's been a while since the last time we saw such hubris and bravado, neither of which yielded any result worthy of mentioning. We're all up for confidence and self-belief, but not if they are employed in such a reckless manner — against what is possibly the best team in all of Europe. How will they react to such a thing, to a reverse sweep of such epic proportions? Has it shaken their confidence, their resolve, or has it, conversely, strengthened it? Has it lit a fire beneath them? We can only theorize at this point, but we'll nonetheless give them the benefit of the doubt on this one and hope for the best; they know what needs to be done so as to emerge victorious, and we're confident they'll be able to deliver.
