SK Telecom T1 vs G2 Esports

For our second Knockout Stage Best of 5, we have an exceptional clash that's downright spectacular. A fight between the Korean and European champions -- what's not to like? This could, in theory, end up being one of the best and most incredible Best of 5 clashes in the entire year: if that isn't reason to tune in then I don't know what is.

On one hand we have a team of unparalleled strength and potential in G2 Esports. They're only just getting started and yet they're already so frighteningly capable and synergetic. They're all on the same page, and when push comes to shove, they're able to do things many thought were impossible.

They're the meta-breakers, and they get away with it more often than not. They're exceptional in every stage of the game and they're showing no signs of stopping. Then again, there is a slight problem when it comes to their inherent playstyle -- they're too aggressive, and depending on the opponent that can be quite the problem. Sometimes they get in their own way, and against an opponent that can punish any one mistake in a split of a second, that can eventually become their biggest bane.

SKT T1 definitely didn't start the tournament off on the right foot, but they were able to quickly overcome their in-game problems and reach a very respectable level of play. In fact, they needed a shockingly short amount of time in order to get going, but then again, nothing less was expected from a team of their caliber. They were basically getting demolished early on (their sixteen minute loss to Invictus Gaming immediately comes to mind) only to rebound and dish out a fairly similar punishment.

In the end, their 7W-3L record is very respectable and worthy of their reputation. Their final game against Invictus Gaming got everyone thinking -- where was this SKT just a couple of days ago? They were downright exceptional in all facets of play, and they were able to make Invictus Gaming look like a bunch of scrubs. To outclass the defending world champions with such ease was a shocking sight.

That one game changed things completely. Going forward, predicting anything with confidence is going to be exceptionally hard. Sure -- they lost a couple of games, but what if they were just picking up steam? What if they were finding their footing in the current meta, and have fully adapted at this point? We also know that SKT are as good as they come in a Best of 5 format, so they're rightfully coming into this clash as the heavy favorites.

Then again, G2 Esports are far from a slouch. Their Mid-Season Invitational run so far has been completely different. They started off on a spectacular note (with a great win over SKT, to boot) only to deteriorate as time went on. They ended the Group Stage with a rather underwhelming 5W-5L record, so it's easy to forget that they took SKT down in both of their recent clashes.

They didn't squeak past either -- they were commanding, in-sync, and highly aggressive. Their patented aggression and playmaking were on full display against the Korean champions. They know what they're up against, and they're surely prepared, with multiple off-meta picks and team comps ready to catch SKT off guard. Will they be able to do it? It's impossible to know right now, because both teams excel in a Best of 5 format. But the fact that they already won against SKT does give their chance some credence.

The odds are simply too alluring not to go all-in with G2 Esports. And this isn't an optimistic stretch either -- the LEC champions have already proven their worth against the Korean powerhouse, and they know how to best prepare in order to get the job done. That said, this should by no means be an easy match, and it'll probably be decided by the slimmest of margins.
