Royal Never Give Up vs G2 Esports

For our second quarter final match of the day, we have another pretty exciting clash between the LPL champions Royal Never Give Up and the former “kings of Europe” - G2 eSports.

This isn’t exactly the most competitive match of the knockout stage, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t engaging - far from it. While RNGU is heavily favored, G2 does have the potential to upset - kind of. Maybe they won’t go the distance and actually take the LPL champions down, but they have the tools to make this into an insanely competitive Best of 5. They have the tools to take RNGU to the brink of defeat - whether or not that’ll happen remains to be seen, but just the sheer posibility makes this match really exciting.

While getting RNGU as your quarter final opponent is the worst possible outcome, G2 isn’t the kind of team that’ll shy away from a challenge. They weren’t predicted to get out of their group, especially after their Play-In level of play, and yet they did. They weren’t heading into the Group Stage with any momentum, their play throughout the 2018 regular season was questionable at best and yet they were able to step up when it mattered the most.

Unfortunately for EU fans, this is probably where their road ends, but it doesn’t mean they’ll go down without a fight.

It’s hard to really find where G2 could capitalize. They don’t really have an edge in any lane overall, barring any exceptional, mindblowing play from Wunder or Perkz. G2’s bottom lane is known for pulling out “cheese” picks like Heimerdinger and even Brand, but you’d think that RNGU are more than well prepared for such shenanigans - after all, they’re led by the greatest AD carry of all time in Uzi and a stellar support in Ming.

On the off chance that Wunder does pop off, G2 could execute and perhaps even get a win. They displayed a lot of potential in the group stage, but they weren’t up against a team of RNGU’s caliber.

From a statistical standpoint, G2 are outclassed in every way, shape, and form - as expected. While stats don’t have to tell the complete story, in this case they’re more than enough seeing how there’s such a huge disparity in skill between both teams. Everyone thought that RNGU would dominate in 6-0 fashion throughout the group stage portion of the tournament, but that didn’t happen.

They were vulnerable, albeit incredibly dominant. We don’t really know how hard they went during the group stage, but they did show kinks in the armor. The only question is - will G2 be able to capitalize? This isn’t even that big of a stylistic mismatch even though G2 focus more on macro and 1-3-1, whereas RNGU focuses more on mid and late game teamfighting. They’re one of the few capable LPL teams that can run 1-3-1, they just prefer not to.

They’ve proven to be the absolute best team in the world throughout 2018, and even though the meta started shifting a bit more towards macro-oriented play, RNGU are still head and shoulders above anything that G2 could come out with.

In order for G2 to be competitive, they have to hold even in the bottom lane - and that’s going to be hard. RNGU’s Letme is a weak point for sure, and if G2 manage to execute in the way they want to they could shut down the LPL top laner and get Wunder ahead, but that alone shouldn’t be enough - it still isn’t a clear viable win condition.

That said, G2 have more than enough tools in order to make this somewhat competitive. Jankos is still a world-class jungler, Wunder is one of the best top laners in the world, and Perkz has proved his worth throughout the years as a player that is synonymous with Western mid lane talent.

While the chances look pretty grim for G2, every time a team decide to create their own “micro meta” was a moment when upsets happened. Team Vitality had a ton of success and yet they were predicted to perhaps even go 0-6 in their group. They were fearless, they wanted to win, they didn’t care who as standing on the opposite side - and that is exactly the mindset and approach that G2 should have when facing RNGU. At the very least, that is the only way that they could stand a chance.

Royal Never Give Up are surely looking to come out the gates and dominate. Regardless of the outcome from the KT Rolster vs. Invictus Gaming match, they’re going to be up against a very tough opponent in the semifinals, and they can use any momentum that they can get. While it’s hard to predict whether it’ll be a 3-0 or something like a 3-1, we can say with full confidence that Royal Never Give Up isn’t going to let this one go the distance.

Betting on the LPL champions is a complete no-brainer for this one.
