KT Rolster vs Team Liquid

For our very first match of the World Championship, we have a pretty exciting clash between the LCK champions KT Rolster and the two-time NA LCS kings Team Liquid.

Both teams are entering with a fair amount of hype, albeit for different reasons. To start things off, KT Rolster was finally able to win an LCK title. The potential to do so was always present - they just needed more time before they were able to sync-up and actually perform up to expectations.

The LCK has always been an insanely strong region - in fact, it was always the strongest. By far. Then came 2018, and a huge power shift gave LPL the edge. Mid and late game team fighting became more impactful, and the LPL reveled in the new, more aggressive and hectic meta.

Fortunately for KT Rolster, Team Liquid comes from one of the weaker regions that are participating at Worlds. In fact, North America performed so badly over the last couple of years that they even lost their first pool seed. While their level of play isn't exactly abysmal, it leaves a lot to be desired (when compared to other regions), and in Liquid's case - they lack creativity and flexibility. They're really good at what they do, but they don't do a whole lot, and when they face a team as strong as KT Rolster things should get very complicated very quickly.

To be fair, Liquid has quite a lot of tools in order to make this into a highly competitive scrap. Whether or not they'll be able to use those tools remains to be seen, but they're the heavy underdogs and with good reason. They mostly win through bottom lane and this time around they're up against Deft and Mata - two absolute legends that are still playing at the highest possible level.

Essentially, KT Rolster is a stronger Team Liquid. They have the better players, they're more cohesive, more experienced, they've all been playing at the highest possible level for so long and they're all grizzled veterans. While they weren't able to dominate from the moment they all signed up, they're as big of a super team as you could possibly get. While you could make an argument that they're not the very best players in the world in their respective positions, they're ranked as a Top 3 team coming into Worlds - and with good reason.

LCK as a region has a chip on their shoulder, especially after getting dominated by the LPL throughout the year at every single international tournament. While Team Liquid should present an interesting challenge, KT shouldn't have too big of a problem in taking them down. That said, the Best of 1 format is pretty volatile, and anything can happen, especially at this level of play, so maybe going all-in with your investment isn't the best route.
