Immortals vs Cloud9
What a strange position to be in. Up until a few hours ago, Cloud9 were the clear favorites and, well, with good reason. But after seeing just how well Immortals have bounced back -- against 100 Thieves, no less -- one simply has to wonder. We knew it was only a matter of time before they got back into the win column, but no one thought it'd happen against a top-tier giant like 100 Thieves. Did the defending champions underestimate the boys in green? It's hard to tell, but it sure didn't look like it. They were simply outplayed by a team that had executed its game plan with more precision and urgency. It was an insanely close game, but we can confidently say that the better team won -- as strange and ludicrous as it might sound.
On the on hand, we're as susprised as everyone else. On the other, we've witnessed so many mind-boggling upsets this week that this really didn't come as that big of a surprise. Immortals had all the right players for the job, so it was just a matter of conjuring up the right approach and executing; it's easier said than done, of course, but still.
Cloud9, on the other hand, also had a stellar showing, despite eventually getting outmuscled by a most cohesive Team Liquid. They went for a slightly more standard team comp -- compared to what they had drafted last week -- and they played it exceptionally well, too. It ultimately didn't matter, but they have nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone on the team carried their fair share of the weight, but Team Liquid simply had more tools to work with, along with a couple of champions that scaled far better than anything Cloud9 had. All in all, their hype and momentum haven't been affected whatsoever. The fact that they could go blow for blow with TL despite having mere days to synergize and come up with a game plan bodes quite well for their chances going forward. They're fearless, feisty, and wholly original in the way they play, and they're already far more dangerous than we had expected.
As for this match-up, specifically, we just don't know what to expect. Everything we had on Immortals is no longer viable intel. They've found their footing and can pack a serious punch -- just ask 100 Thieves. Whether they're good and consistent enough to rub shoulders with Cloud9 is a question we can't wait to see get answered. We simply cannot bet against LS and his boys, but we're nonetheless wary of Immortals coming out in full force and putting on a clinic. It's a rational fear, after what they did to the defending champions, so proceed with caution.
