Gen.G esports vs Top Esports

Next up, we have yet another Best of 5 clash for the ages: Top Esports vs. Gen.G. Much like the match before it, this one could go either way as both teams displayed immense potential not just over the course of the 2020 Mid-Season Cup, but also throughout their respective Spring Split runs.

We're talking about two spectacular line-ups with incredible depth and talent. One quick glance at their players is all you need to get hyped beyond comprehension. These are veterans and future superstars alike, and they're definitely playing with a chip on their shoulder. Still -- much like JD and FPX before them -- they're far from perfect, as evidenced by their inconsistent play over the last two days.

Gen.G are the only Korean representatives in the Mid-Season Cup semifinals, and they got to this point by upsetting JD Gaming, going 1-1 with DragonX, and outclassing an anemic Invictus Gaming. Heck, "anemic" might be an understatement. Overall, they fought valiantly and they certainly deserve their spot amongst the Top 4. Still, their play left a lot to be desired. At best, they were mind-blowing from start to finish, spearheaded by the legendary Bdd in the mid lane. At worst, however, they were slow, subdued, and reactive. If anything, they have clear-cut win conditions, and teams shouldn't have too big of a problem in pin-pointing their biggest strengths and weaknesses. The four games they played so far should give Top Esports more than enough information to digest and come up with a stellar gameplan.

One could also argue that they didn't have the toughest of opposition in their group. DragonX is a fantastic team but they already fell pray to Gen.G over in the LCK Spring Split. Invictus Gaming was supposed to be quite a formidable challenge, but that failed to be the case and no one's quite sure why. The former World Champions failed to get even a single win on the board and have looked downright abysmal in all three of their outings. This means that Gen.G, as flawed as they are, were the clear-cut favorites to get out. It's not like it's an undeserved triumph, but they weren't challenged as much as people expected.

Top Esports, on the other hand, are a layered, incredibly capable LPL threat. The fact that they nearly took down JD Gaming in the LPL Spring Split finals mere weeks ago should tell you all you need to know when it comes to their strength and overall potential. They weren't without fault over the last two days, but their play definitely imbues one with confidence. With names like Karsa, Knight, and JackeyLove, you can expect non-stop skirmishing, unrelenting aggression, and a boatload of mechanical prowess to boot. They have threats in all three lanes and they have the depth to back up any play, no matter how outlandish in nature.

Will that be enough against Gen.G, however? Predicting the outcome between two teams that have never fought against each other is quite a gargantuan challenge (not to mention their vastly different styles of play). Still, Top Esports are favored, and there's a good reason why that's the case. If they bring their A game, they shouldn't have too big of a problem in taking Gen.G down.

That said, much like the Best of 5 preceding it, this is far from a safe bet. Gen.G are playing with a chip on their shoulder and they have all the right players within their ranks to make a splash. Either way, expect absolute chaos on all fronts.
