G2 Esports vs SK Gaming

For our fourth game of the day we have a somewhat interesting clash between the defending champions G2 Esports and SK Gaming. Now, to be fair, this is by no means a clash worthy of everyone's attention. All signs are pointing towards a pretty one-sided beatdown, but still -- watching G2 in action is always a big enough reason to tune in, regardless of whom they're up against.

Reading G2's current power level is downright impossible. So, on the one hand, they're still very much the G2 of old. Dominant, clean, insanely talented with a metric ton of potential and mechanical prowess. After all, such thing was expected seeing how they've retained the exact same five-man line-up. Then again, they're not looking quite as strong as in 2019. Perkz is once again wrecking kids in the mid lane but Caps didn't make the transition over to AD carry that well, especially not as well as Perkz did in the beginning of 2019. He's not exactly bad, but he's failing to dominate as much as he did in the past and that -- in hindsight -- is understandable seeing how he's playing a completely different role, one that requires an entirely different approach. He is no longer able to bend the rules of the game at will and to go for insane 1 vs. 3 or 1 vs. 4 plays and still stand a chance of getting out alive. He went from being the most important player in the game, one with the most gold and power to a fairly immobile glass cannon that only goes online in the later stages of the game.

For a player like Caps, that's about as big of a sentence as you can possible give him. He wants to go in and to create chaos, he wants to dominate beyond measure and yet he's emasculated from start to finish. Watching him struggle so much is no easy sight, and it's evident in their team-wide play and impact as well. It's not that he's a bad AD carry but by losing such a powerful asset, G2 are simply far less dominant and dangerous. By having Perkz in the bottom lane, they were able to have two of the best mid laners in history all under one roof. Perkz, to his credit, adapted beautifully and was able to leave a mark from the very get-go. Caps, on the other hand, just isn't a good fit for the role. With one less behemoth within their line-up, we're seeing a much weaker G2. They'll still go places and are a lock-in for the playoffs if not the finals, but whether or not they have what it takes to win the whole thing yet again remains to be seen.

It's just impossible to imagine Caps popping off in the same way Rekkles or Upset do once the late game comes along. His brain is simply wired in a different way. Will G2 adapt as a whole? Will they still be able to dominate? It's still too early to know for sure, but watching them fight and further develop will be an absolute must.

SK Gaming, on the other hand, are currently looking as one of the worst teams in the region. Heck, maybe that's a bit too much mercy -- they're definitely the worst team in the region after losing to Team Vitality last week (a team that doesn't even have its starting mid laner). There's just no hope at this point and they've shown very little over the last five weeks to warrant any kind of trust or benefit of the doubt. Certain members, like Crownshot or Sacre have good moments from time to time, but even on a good day they're just not strong enough to compete even with the mid-tier gatekeepers, let alone a team that's at the top of the region.

So obviously, we're going with G2 Esports on this one although not with full confidence. G2 are favored (and stronger) in every way, shape, and form, but you never really know what they'll pull out and whether or not they're in the mood to troll. They need to keep winning and they know it, but they're also prone to drafting off-the-wall stuff and having fun when you'd least expect it.
