CLG vs 100 Thieves

To open up the second week of the LCS, we have a rather fascinating clash between Counter Logic Gaming and 100 Thieves. Now, predicting the outcome of this one is pretty darn hard. On the one hand, CLG didn't exactly impress us in their first week of play. Their two losses to FlyQuest and Team Dignitas certainly don't instill much confidence. On the other, in hindsight, they had a fairly tough strength of schedule to start things off.

Dignitas is currently an absolute power house and is swinging hard from the moment they spawn on the Rift, whereas FlyQuest -- even though no one truly believed in them coming into the season -- reverted back to their fundamentals and are playing some very solid (and engaging) League of Legends. So by no means was this an easy start. Then again, one might argue that Counter Logic Gaming should've fought back more. They made just two changes to their line-up and both could be deemed as upgrades, and yet we saw no upgraded team play. They're obviously going through growing pains and it's evident on the Summoner's Rift as well.

We mustn't forget that they were a Top 4 team as recently as Summer of 2019, and with Crown in the mid lane and Smoothie as support, they've made all the right changes to remain that high for the foreseeable future. Obviously they are far from a top-tier behemoth, but they deserve our benefit of the doubt.

100 Thieves, on the other hand, had an okay 1W-1L week after beating the Golden Guardians and losing to Evil Geniuses. They looked pretty solid, but they certainly didn't impress much. Their win over the Golden Guardians was shaky (and prolonged) and their loss to Evil Geniuses had a couple of good moments, but it just wasn't enough. They remained competitive early on, but once the mid and later stages of the game came along they were unable to contain Evil Geniuses' aggression.

What can come out of a clash between two fairly similar teams, with fairly similar power levels? They're basically equal, all things considered. Counter Logic Gaming has a stronger mid laner but that's about it. It feels like 100 Thieves perhaps lack very little to become a playoff worthy contender, although no one can tell with certainty when (if ever) that's going to happen.

In the end, we have to side with 100 Thieves on this one. It's an upset pick, that's for sure, but they've shown us more in their first two outings that Counter Logic Gaming, and if they play intelligently and in a subdued manner, they're bound to start off strong and get an early lead. CLG, to their credit, have all the right tools to get the win as well, although their lack of any evident synergy is a bit worrying.
