About Starcraft 2

Starcraft is an RTS game whereby players choose between three different species and then fight it out on a preselected map. Each player starts with very little, and from there they have to harvest resources, build a base and an army, and then destroy their opponents. The expansion pack of StarCraft 2 is Heart of the Swarm, which is usually what you will find played at events and tournaments. Towards the end of 2015, the second expansion, Legacy of the Void, will also be released.

StarCraft 2 is a hugely popular game. It has received immense praise from the most respected reviewers and review sites, and it sold over three million copies within its first month of release. This game is adored in South Korea, where is has gained a massive following, and it is the fastest selling game of all time in its genre. It was designed by the same man behind the Command & Conquer series, which is often considered to be the father of StarCraft, lending much of its design, style and gameplay to the series.

Types of Bets

Starcraft 2 bets typically revolve around a tournament or event. You can bet on the outright winner, but you can also bet on who will reach the semi-final or the quarter final. In many events you will be able to bet on which country the winner will come from, or how far Korean, Chinese, US and other nations will make it in the tournament. If the tournament has a heavy favourite, which is common with the smaller events, then you will often find bets such as “Winner Without [Favourite]”, which essentially takes the short priced favourite out of the equation and allows you to bet based on his theoretical absence.

There is a noticeable lack of prop bets for Starcraft 2, and I actually have a problem seeing that remedied right now. It is a combination of there being less milestones in the game and the bookmakers willingness in general to add them to the game. I could definitely see some bets like “Will player A reach max supply?” or “Will game last over 15 minutes?” as examples. Sadly, no options as of yet though.

Basics Betting Strategy

Starcraft 2 consists of three difference playable races, Terran, Protoss and Zerg, and players can choose any of these. From the point of view of a gambler, none of these races has a big advantage over any of the others, which means that the outcome of the game comes down to the ability of the player or team. You will need an understanding of the game and its biggest stars before you can hope to profit from it, but once you have that down, then you can start picking up some big wins.

Standard betting knowledge comes into play here as well, so make sure that you do know your basic sports betting math. You need to make sure you understand that this is a game of small edges and probabilities. You cannot simply bet on the huge favorite and hoping to rake in the cash. There are numerous examples of underdogs claiming the win, like Polt beating out Boxer in GSL 3. And this is not special for Starcraft 2, this happens in all sports you can bet on.

When you are looking to handicap Starcraft 2 matches you are most likely looking to find out who will win the specific match. It is not like other sports, where you can bet on many other types of bets like totals, props and so on. So the metrics you want to calculate are the chances the opponents have beating each other on the specific map(s) that are being played and compare this to the odds given.

To find a usable number for the win probability a player has, there are a couple of things you definitely should consider. The first thing is to check the players recent form. Players end up in slumps at different points in their career, and this can stem from different reasons. Could it simply be a down-period, or has the meta in the game shifted the play from more micro-intensive to macro-intensive (or vice versa)? Figuring out WHY a player suffers (or excels) should be looked into more to maybe find an advantage.

Another metric to look at is matchup win rates. This can, along with other stats and information, be found at Starcraft 2 wiki on TeamLiquid. Here you might find that some players favor specific matchups, like forGG who is exceptionally good at playing TvT. You can also check their recent form in these matchups, to see if their strategy or game plans might have changed for better or for the worse. Remember to also check that the results are actually recent, and not use games from last year. These are probably not predictive of the next couple of games being played.

Biggest Tournaments

Starcraft 2 was a prominent feature of the illustrious World Cyber Games, which was an annual event held in South Korea from 2000 to 2013. This attracted the best of the best across the industry, with many games included but with Starcraft 2 being one of the standout ones. The World Cyber Arena took over from the World Cyber Games in 2014.

Today, one of the biggest tournaments is the Global Starcraft 2 League, which is joint hosted by GOMeXp and Blizzard Entertainment. This is where some of the best players in the game converge, with a number of tournaments and events played. Starcraft 2 has also featured at the Major League Gaming event, held annually in the United States, and at the Dreamhack event.

The World Championship Series also features Starcraft 2, as well as some other Blizzard Entertainment games, such as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone.
