Responsible Gaming

Problem gambling is a universal issue and it seems that susceptibility to it is inherent in many of us. However, it is interesting to note that whilst problem gambling is not restricted by borders or cultures, there are countries who report that significantly higher portions of their population is affected by it, and this is unrelated to the availability of gambling in those countries. Therefore, this suggests that the assistance offered by governments and organisations, which drastically changes from country to country, can go a long way to helping those in need.

So, what should you do if you think you are at risk, what help can you get and how can you know if you actually are at risk?

The Signs of a Problem Gambler

According to, a non-profit organisation that provides resources on problem gambling and other addictions, the signs of someone who has a problem with gambling, and/or someone who is heading in that direction, include the “need to be secretive about gambling” and the desire to gamble “even when [they] don’t have the money”. If friends and family have expressed concern about your gambling habits and if you are thinking about gambling non-stop then you may also be dealing with a gambling addiction.

There are many fallacies associated with gambling addiction, including the belief that you need to be losing a lot of money or you need to be gambling everyday in order to qualify as an addict. This is simply not the case. If gambling is causing severe detriment to your life, be it your social life, your career or even your finances, then you could be an addict. In truth, you should know whether you are or not yourself. Of course, you probably won’t admit this to anyone else, but this is also a sign of a problem, because as with all addictions, gambling addicts often refuse to admit they have an issue.

Problem Gambling Organisations

Regardless of where you are in the world, there will likely be a non-profit organisation setup in order to help you. They provide help, assistance, and give you someone to talk over your problems with. In the UK there is GamCare and Gamble Aware; in the US there is the NCPG; and in Australia there is Problem Gambling. These exist all over and are often more than willing to help you regardless of the severity of your addiction.
